This green papaya salad , known as som tam, is popular in most areas of Thailand. This papaya salad is best served with sticky rice and grilled chicken. The three most popular types of green papaya salad have either dried shrimp , salted crab or Pla rah . Green papaya salad with dried shrimp and peanuts is called som tum thai. The green papaya salad with salted crab is called som tum pbooh. The green papaya salad with Pla rah is called som tum Pla rah. The majority of the ingredients are the same.


  • 6 Thai chili peppers
  • 2-3 garlic cloves
  • 1 tomato cut into wedges
  • 1 eggplant cut into wedges(Option)
  • 1 fermented crab
  • 1 handful chopped green papaya
  • 1/4 cup green beans cut into 1-in pieces
  • 1 tbsp. fish sauce
  • 2-3 tbsp. lime juice
  • 1-2 tsp palm sugar or sugar
  • 1/4 cup carrot(Option)


  1. Use mortar and pestle to crush the chili and garlic, add fermented crab (or if you make som tum Thai you can add dry shrimps,) continue crushing.
  2. Add sugar, continue beating with the pestle, then add green bean, green papaya, fish sauce, lime juice, Continue beating until all ingredients mixed well. then add tomato
  3. The original taste this dish should be the balance taste between sour , sweet, hot, and salty
  4. Serve with vegetables (e.g. cabbage, string bean,  etc.). or Sticky Rice ,grilled chicken.
